This custom 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Torpedo touring car was the peak of luxury for its time. Fast, powerful, quiet, reliable, and smooth. It was also so expensive, you had to be no less than royalty to buy one. Fortunately, Umed Singh II found himself in just such a position. He was the Maharaja of Kotah, a region in India, and decided he wanted a new car. However, he wanted more from his Roller than just a top of the line touring car. He was an avid sportsman, and wanted a car that reflected that. So he ordered his Phantom with larger tires, enormous spotlights, and some guns. The gun rack in the rear partition contains many large rifles and pistols. The passenger side running boards carry boxes of hunting equipment. In place of an old fashioned trunk, we find a large !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! But is was that enough for our dear Maharaja? Oh no, of course not. Why simply kill things when you could overkill them?

In tow behind this impressive car is an impressive trailer. This trailer is a massive Bira .450 caliber machine gun. The gun was designed for combat, but never saw operation. Instead, this imposing weapon found itself being towed along behind the Maharaja's Rolls-Royce, and then occasionally being fired at tigers or elephants, hence the red Rolls being nicknamed, " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ". Needless to say, a head of state could never own a car like this today (outside the Middle East, that is). Of course, the 8 liter straight six under the hood was more than enough to carry the car, the hunting party, their equipment, and the big gun across most terrain. And, should the car get stuck, you could always reign in a couple stout elephants to pull it out again. Oh wait...

This car was mentioned last year on Jalopnik, but as we prepare to celebrate our nation's independence from the former British empire, I fell like it is appropriate to re-mention perhaps the coolest car to be directly tied to British Imperialism in India.

I've seen this in person! It was at the Auto Collection in Vegas when I went a few years ago. It was incredible

It was auctioned off in Vegas, in 2011 I think. Very cool that you got to see it.

Unsurprisingly similar getups were popular in Texas.
